you can re-up your contract (even if you have time left on it) and get a new phone for the discounted rates. Or if enough time has passed you can get one at a reduced rate.

sounds like you're going about it the hard way. I'd just re-up the contract (as long as you like the service) and pick a nice new one for a good price.
